What are hopscotch and playground games?
Playground games markings are thermoplastic versions of the games children already know, hopscotch, snakes and ladders, noughts and crosses, hop grids and board games, laid straight onto the yard. They give children a ready-made reason to move at break and lunch, which takes the pressure off a busy space and draws in the ones who drift at the edges. Because the rules are already understood, a new hopscotch or snakes and ladders is in use within minutes of being installed, with no teaching needed.
Why schools choose them
Play that starts itself
Children already know hopscotch and snakes and ladders, so a new grid is busy the moment it goes down, with nobody having to explain it.
Draws in the quieter children
A simple game at the edge of the yard gives the children who hover a way in, and often becomes the busiest spot at lunch.
Gets movement into every break
Hopping, jumping and taking turns builds balance and coordination, and it happens naturally when the games are there to play.
Types of hopscotch and playground games we install
Hopscotch, snakes and ladders and board games that get a corner busy.
Hopscotch
The classic 1 to 10 hop grid, and themed versions such as a caterpillar or rocket for younger children.
Snakes and ladders
A giant board children move across as the counters, great for turn-taking and counting.
Noughts and crosses and grids
Quick two-player games and hop grids that pack a lot of play into a small patch of tarmac.
Traditional and board games
Draughts, ludo-style boards and other old favourites scaled up for the yard.
How the work goes
Survey, design, install and aftercare, and most of it is ours to do.
- 01
Survey
We look at the spare corners and quieter edges of your playground, since a well-placed game often does most to spread children out and calm a busy space.
- 02
Design
We draw the games you have chosen at the right scale with their colours, so you can picture the finished corner before we start.
- 03
Install
Each game is masked and laid in thermoplastic on site. A cluster of small games is usually completed within a day.
- 04
Aftercare
The games are ready to play as soon as they cool. We can add more, or theme a set around your school, on a later visit.
What do hopscotch and playground games cost?
Individual games such as a hopscotch or noughts and crosses often start somewhere around £60 to £250 each fitted, while a large snakes and ladders board costs more. Choosing a handful of games in one visit is the cheapest way to get a corner buzzing. The exact figure depends on the designs, the area and access, so we survey and send a fixed quote.

Hopscotch and playground games: your questions answered
Which playground games are the most popular?
Hopscotch, snakes and ladders and noughts and crosses are the ones schools ask for again and again, because children already know them and they get busy straight away. A giant snakes and ladders tends to become the centrepiece, with smaller games filling the quieter edges.
How much space do playground games need?
Not much. A hopscotch fits into about a metre by three, and noughts and crosses into an even smaller patch, which is why they work so well in the corners and edges that otherwise sit empty. A giant snakes and ladders needs more room, and we plan the layout around what you have.
Are the games suitable for all ages?
Yes. Hopscotch, hop grids and board games suit EYFS through to Year 6, and we can theme the simpler ones, a caterpillar hopscotch for the little ones, for example, while keeping the classics for older children. We will suggest an age-appropriate mix at design.
