What are maze markings?
A maze marking is a winding thermoplastic path laid onto the playground that children follow, trace and puzzle their way through. It ranges from a simple walk-the-spiral for the youngest children to a proper puzzle maze with dead ends and choices for older ones. A maze quietly rewards patience, planning and a bit of trial and error, and because it invites children to trace the route on foot, it keeps a corner of the yard busy without any equipment or supervision to set up.
Why schools choose them
Problem-solving that feels like play
Finding the route through a maze is planning and trial and error in disguise, and children keep at it because it feels like a game.
A calm, absorbing activity
Tracing a spiral or working out a path suits the children who want something quieter at break, and it draws them in without a scrap of equipment.
Fits an awkward space
A maze can be shaped to a long thin strip, a corner or an odd bit of tarmac, turning space that is hard to use into something children choose.
Types of maze markings we install
Winding paths that pull children into problem-solving at play.
Spiral mazes
A single winding path in and back out, ideal for EYFS and early walkers who just want to follow the line.
Puzzle mazes
Junctions, choices and dead ends for older children to solve, with a clear start and finish.
Themed mazes
A maze wrapped around a theme, a jungle, a treasure map or your school emblem, to tie it to the rest of the yard.
Fingertip and mini mazes
Small traceable mazes for quiet, focused play in a compact spot.
How the work goes
Survey, design, install and aftercare, and most of it is ours to do.
- 01
Survey
We look at the space and its shape, because a maze is one of the best ways to make use of a long, thin or awkward stretch of playground.
- 02
Design
We draw the maze at the right scale with its start, finish and route, so you can follow the path yourself before it is laid.
- 03
Install
The maze is masked and applied in thermoplastic on site, and a single maze is typically completed within a day.
- 04
Aftercare
It is ready to walk once cool. We can theme it, add a second maze or combine it with trails and games on a later visit.
What do maze markings cost?
A playground maze usually falls somewhere around £300 to £900 fitted, depending on its size, how intricate the path is and the number of colours. A simple EYFS spiral costs less than a large themed puzzle maze. The figure depends on the design, the area and access, so we survey the space and give you a fixed quote first.

Maze markings: your questions answered
What age is a playground maze suitable for?
It depends on the maze. A simple spiral suits EYFS and early walkers who just follow the line, while a puzzle maze with junctions and dead ends stretches Key Stage 2. We can install one of each, or a single maze pitched at the year groups that will use it most.
Can a maze fit an odd-shaped space?
Yes, and that is often where it works best. Because a maze is really a winding path, we can shape it to a long thin strip, a corner or an irregular patch of tarmac, which turns space that is otherwise hard to use into something children actively choose.
Can the maze match a theme?
It can. We regularly wrap a maze around a jungle, a treasure map or a school emblem so it fits the rest of the yard, and we confirm the theme and colours on the design drawing before we install it.
