Bright themed mural and wall art beside a school playground

What are wall art and vertical markings?

Wall art is a vertical playground marking applied to a wall or fence, an educational board, a target wall, a mark-making panel or a themed mural, that puts an unused surface to work. It reaches the space a ground marking cannot, so a bare boundary wall becomes a place to aim, write, read or play. Options run from a chalkboard and a phonics wall to a ball-target panel and a full painted scene, letting schools add another dimension of activity without giving up any of the yard.

Why schools choose them

Uses space you already have

A blank wall or fence is playground you are not using. Wall art puts it to work without taking a metre off the ground the children play on.

Another way to learn and play

Aiming at a target wall, writing on a chalk panel or reading a phonics board adds activity at standing height, reaching children a floor marking cannot.

Brightens a dull boundary

A themed mural or a splash of colour turns a grey boundary wall into something children enjoy looking at, and lifts the whole feel of the yard.

How the work goes

Survey, design, install and aftercare, and most of it is ours to do.

  1. 01

    Survey

We check the wall or fence is sound and suitable, and talk through what you want it to do, a target, a board, a mural, and where it will be seen and used most.

  2. 02

    Design

We draw the artwork to the wall, agree the colours and content, and send a proof for you to approve before we start.

  3. 03

    Install

We prepare the surface and apply the artwork by hand on site. Most wall pieces are completed within a day, weather permitting.

  4. 04

    Aftercare

Ready to use once dry. We can add panels, extend a mural or refresh the artwork on a later visit as the wall earns its keep.

What do wall art and vertical markings cost?

Wall art is priced by the size of the wall and the detail of the design, so a simple educational board or target wall often starts somewhere around £250 to £700, while a large themed mural runs higher. The surface and its condition affect the figure too. We survey the wall, draw the design and give you a fixed quote before any work begins.

Wall art and vertical markings: your questions answered

What can go on a playground wall?

Educational boards such as phonics walls and number lines, ball-target and activity panels, chalk and mark-making surfaces, and full themed murals. The wall decides some of it, condition and size, and we confirm what suits yours at survey, then draw it to the space.

Will wall art last outdoors?

Yes, when the wall is sound and properly prepared. We use exterior-grade coatings suited to outdoor conditions and prepare the surface first, which is what makes the artwork hold up. We will tell you honestly at survey if a wall needs attention before it can take a design.

Can wall art be educational as well as decorative?

It can, and often is both. A phonics wall or number line teaches at standing height while brightening a dull boundary, and a target wall adds active play. We can combine learning and colour in one design so the wall does more than one job.
